Liminal Spaces

“Liminal Spaces” is a series of graphite drawings that explore ephemerality. This body of work consists of twenty drawings completed over a six-month period focusing on the study of natural objects. Each drawing is 22” x 30” and the work functions together as an installation.

After teaching drawing at the college level for years, I chose to deviate from my usual study of ceramics and explore observational drawing as subject matter. I started drawing objects from my yard and the ocean in an attempt to capture the transitory nature of our environment. What started off as a study soon turned into a full-fledged investigation. Objects from nature, such as pods, bulbs and budding plants soon contrasted the exquisiteness of blossom with the intricacy of decay. The splendor of objects in bloom quickly turned into a mirage. While the drawings are studies from nature, there is an element of abstraction that has occurred during the process. This series of artwork captures humanity’s inevitable decline and the cyclical nature of the lifecycle.
